Jazz Guitar Chords
Jazz is an art form that many guitarists do not fully understand. This is namely due to the fact that they either did not learn the musical system or its foundation, or that they are trained to read staff and don't know how to explore their instrument. It's important before you start into jazz to try and get a good feel for the basic chords before delving into the final frontier. Jazz is a complex medium of dissonance and harmony that only one skilled with tonality can fully comprehend. Of course it always helps to have a little map you can folow too, but the ear training is essential to get the most out of it.
Starting with a simply Major Seven chord is usually the best. Once you have heard the sound of this chord you will want to know how to reproduce it. some of the root position chords are difficult to finger at first but you eventually get he hang of it with time just like everything else. Minor Seven is another great variety of chord voicing. It is of course derived from the minor family and has the mood of "sophisticated sadness" to it.
Yu will find more often than not there is a feeling associated with every type of chord. Some are happy, some are mellow, some are downright ugly. But given time and placed in the right area in a progression, they can prove to be great assets.
Some of the best songs are really just the easiest ones. They normally contain 3 chords which are generally the 1st, 4th, and 5th degrees of the scale to which you would attribute certain places in the song to. The blues is probably the easiest to understand because its format is based on these three chords all day long!
So you may be asking what is a degree? How many notes does it take to construct a Major Chord? Minor? Seven Chords? The answer is very simple, and as you gain some valuable insights into this territory you will find more often than not something will pop in your understanding. Namely your ability to se music as a whole system instead of piece-mealed parts and bits and pieces. There is an inherent pattern written on the wall of music.
To find out what that pattern is click
