What bass amp should i get?
I am thinking of purchasing a new bass amp for my bass. I currently use my bro's 30W guitar amp but when i jam with my 'band' (really just a few mates playing covers and sh!t in a shed lol) it just isn't loud enough and clean enough when i turn it up all the way. The drummer in my band doesn't have it mic'ed up and doesnt play too loudly (the guitarists has a 25W amp and plays at about 6/10 volume and can be heard fine). I was wondering what wattage i should get to be heard over the drums clearly. I have £100 - £140 to spend so if you could recommend one that would be just fab! The bass i have is a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass.
There is really only one bass amplifier in the low-end price range to even consider purchasing. That is the Behringer ULTRABASS BXL1800 - http://www.guitarcenter.com/Behringer-Ultrabass-BXL1800-180W-1x12--Bass-Combo-481098-i1166248.gc - I would coast you around 162 pounds. For a little more (approximately 195 pounds) you could get Behringer's more powerful 300 watt bass amplifier - http://www.guitarcenter.com/Behringer-Ultrabass-BXL1800-180W-1x12--Bass-Combo-481098-i1166248.gc
These amplifiers are a little out of your price range. But, there are the BEST you can buy in an inexpensive bass amplifier. You need a lot of wattage to really drive that deep bass sound. 300 watts is about right. However, if you are playing in a small space, the 180 watt amplifier would be just fine. You might also look at Hartke bass amplifiers. http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-HAR-HM5410-LIST - But, keep in mind that you really need 200 to 300 watts or more to drive that deep bass sound. Anything less than that and you'll just blend into the rest of the noise and won't be heard clearly. I know, I'm a bass player. I play through a 500 watts per channel amplifier that drives two 15" JBL speakers and in addition that that, I have two 400 watt powered 12" JBL subwoofers to give me that truly low-end sound for the low E and low B-strings on the 5-string bass. When you play a 5-string bass, you really need a Frequency Response from your speakers of 28 Hz or below to support the low-end sound on the 4th (E) and 5th (B) strings.
