Difference between a precision bass and a jazz bass?
I'm not sure what the difference is, but then again i've only played with my Ibanez, so I have no idea what any other basses feel like.

The P Bass has a "Split pickup:, that is similar to a humbucker, in that the sound is thick, and quiet, no hum, when you get close to the amp.
It also has a little thicker neck,
they can vary a LOT from year to year, and bass to bass, for necks and weight.
The Jazz bass has two single coil pickups, that are a bit thinner, cleaner, than the P bass, but you can mix/blend the 2, so it does have a lot more variety in tone.
When you have both pickups on, and they are the same volume/balanced, they work together like the P bass as a humbucker, so it is quiet then,
It MIGHT be a little noisier, when you get close to amp, if only one pickup is on, or if one pickup is louder than the other.
Not a problem most of the time, just something to be aware of.
The P bass is just a nice fat, thick Fender tone.
Works real well in trios, or anytime you want a big fat sound, to fill it out.
I prefer the Jazz, in groups that have a "busier" sound or when there are keys, etc.
It tends to "sit in the pocket" a little better, not as likely to get "lost in the mix" if there is a lot going on, keys, multiple guitar, horns etc,
Of course, there are MANY exceptions to all these
"general" rules, which is why I have both, and which one I use depends on the circumstances, the band, what mood I'm in ?
