Is the glass cockpit in airplanes a bad idea?
I am a pilot and own a 1980 model Cessna 172xp. I fly using the traditional panel w/ six pack instruments and VOR, ADF, and all that jazz. I believe that the glass cockpit as seen in newer planes is a bad idea due to my encounters with my portable GPS giving me problems (losing signal, cutting off, etc...). I believe this digital nonsense is way more faulty than the analog. Can anyone tell me more about the glass cockpit. Maybe someone who owns a plane with one. Thanks.
Electronic displays (glass cockpits) are more reliable than the mechanical versions they replace. Additionally, they are easy to reconfigure and update with improved software.
While I cannot comment on your particular situation, after more than 12000 hours of flight time in both, I believe the electronic versions offer much better information and reliability. If I were spec-ing an airplane and had the choice, I would choose the glass displays over mechanical instruments
