who are the best jazz musicians i should listen to?
i was at my friend's place the other day when we started watchin this DVD about chris botti..quite fascinating! the fact is, though, i don't know a lot about jazz, so -since i find it extremely interesting - which jazz musician do u think i should listen to? thanx in advance!

teaim, if i wanted chris botti's sound i wouldn't have asked for suggestions about ANY (good) jazz musician, don't u think?
You should certainly check out 'Kind of Blue' by Miles Davis, cause it's great, but it's not the greatest album of all time. For a start, it's all in the one mood - hushed and mournful.
For a more explosive and exciting recording, try an equally amazing album - 'A Love Supreme' by John Coltrane. Coltrane was a tenor sax player; he played on 'Kind of Blue' but his own thing was much more intense and warm than what Miles liked to do. This is a highly emotional and moving album and I thoroughly recommend it.
Other great recordings are:
Bill Evans Trio - Sunday at the Village Vanguard. Fabulously beautiful and delicate. (Piano)
Charlie Parker - Complete Savoy Master Takes. Incredibly exciting, very influential, played way faster than we are used to jazz being played these days, almost dizzying. Parker was a true genius, very important to all jazz that has come after. (Alto sax)
Bud Powell - The Amazing Bud Powell Volumes 1 & 2. Fabulous music by another pioneer, same generation as Parker. Powell had a very sad life but his playing is full of energy and spirit, almost scarily imaginative and daring. (Piano)
Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um. Mingus was a larger than life guy, amazing bass player but mostly remembered as a brilliant composer. Some of his best tunes are on here, including the gorgeous 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat', an elegy for the great sax player Lester Young. (Mingus played bass but he led a large band.)
Ornette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz to Come. Ornette Coleman was (and is) a real pioneer and this is one of his classic recordings. Made in the early 1960s and in some ways never surpassed. (Alto sax)
Duke Ellington - Ellington at Newport (Complete). Duke Ellington was simply the greatest composer in jazz history and this is one of the greatest concerts ever given. It starts out fine enough, but half way through he gets one of his sax players to give a solo that builds....and builds....and builds...until the crowd goes absolutely ballistic. Wonderful tunes, wonderful playing, great atmosphere.
There are dozens of other things I could recommend but these are great to start. Enjoy!
