How can I improve my Jazz improvisations? Help me Jazz instructors!!!?
I never got any formal training on Jazz piano, I just had a feel for it, and it think I got through the basics: the different scales, a few licks, etc. Do you have suggestions for my improvement?
What's helped me is listening to jazz a lot. This is a must considering that jazz is extremely unique as well as an aural tradition. When you improvise, you play things based on what you have previously heard sometime in your life. Listening provides great ideas for improv as well.
Also, while listening, try humming your own solo over the chords of the song while the melody is being played or while someone else is improvising. This will help you get some ideas and teach you to listen to what you hear in your head.
Next you have to get it to the piano. Spend some time just sitting there and playing what you hear. When you play a note that you didn't hear in your head (notice how I didn't say wrong note because it's not wrong), try to find that note and then play that phrase again. This will help you hear intervals. The more and more you do this, the easier it becomes to play what you hear.
I play saxophone and these are the steps I take to improvise. An understanding of music theory helps a lot too, but sometimes that just confuses me. Often times what I do is figure out what scale works for most of the chorus and just practice improvising on that scale and making up ideas for my solos. I hope this helps.
