I absolutely adore ballet, en pointe particularly, and I'd like opinions if I should take lessons again?
I am 13 years old and I play lacrosse, soccer, volleyball, and I horseback ride year round. I go to private school so I have a considerable amount of work each night. I used to take ballet / jazz / tap lessons, but I quit when I was maybe 5-6 years old. It just didn't interest me anymore. But I have recently decided that I want to begin taking classes again. Just ballet this time, but my goal is to eventually learn to dance en pointe. It's so beautiful and graceful and I just adore it. I know that the best dancers are slightly duckfooted [or so I have heard] but I am rather pigeontoed. I do not know if I am too old to start lessons but I am very physically fit and willing to take on a challenge. I just need to know how much ballet I will have to do a week and for how long before I might be ready to dance en pointe. It is very important to me that I not be stopped from playing any of my current sports, or to stop horseback riding [my passion]. Any replies?
I'm a ballet teacher, former professional ballet dancer, and I can tell you that while you are not too old to pick up your lessons again (I didn't start ballet until I was 15 and had a very successful career), you are probably too busy with your other activites to really devote the necessary time to your ballet to eventually go on pointe. It is a matter of building up physical strength to support yourself once on pointe, and that take years, starting with many hours spent doing straight ballet (not on pointe). I don't say any of this to discourage you, because as the first person who commented says, if you love it and want to do it, GO FOR IT! And you don't want to be a professional ballet dancer, than fit what you can into your schedule and maybe one day you'll be ready to be on pointe. Just don't try to do that too early b/c you could really hurt your feet and/or body and you risk injury. I guess my point is (no pun intended, ha ha) that if you might have to choose what activities you want to devote your time and energy too, but getting to a level where you can dance on pointe takes one's full attention and devotion...speaking from experience.
