Beginning double bass music suggestions?
I am just starting the double bass (my parents are not too happy about this because the violin is my primary instrument) and my parents don't really want to get me a teacher right away. My dad said I should find some books to start learning basic stuff with. What are some books that I could get that would help me start to learn to play the double bass? (By the way I would like to learn classical and jazz bass.)
To be blunt...
Simandl, Simandl, Simandl, Simandl!!!
Simandl is the standard for bass pedagogy. You would need to get book one (and a teacher! please!), which has a bright orange cover. Start from page one, because the book covers the instrument in a very orderly fashion. Also, make sure to pay attention to the fingerings, which reminds me--- Learn all the notes on the E string, though the book advises against it in the higher positions. The reason the book says so is because the bass was much different than it was when the book was written (late 1800's).
In terms of solo repertoire thats easy--
1. Early etudes in Simandl's "30 etudes for string bass" (its a seperate book from the Simandl method book).
2. St Saens "L'Elephant"--- This is a very elementary bass solo thats really fun to play.
3. (Eventually) Marcello Sonata in E minor (Movements 1-3)-- This will introduce you to baroque ornamentation such as the trill and the mordant!
