Baby Boom?!??!?!?
i am doing a research project on how music evolves from raggtime to jazz to bebop and rock and roll. but all the books i read about on the "transformation" from jazz to rock and roll, said something about WWII's baby boom....
what does that have anything to do with the music transformation? thanks for your help. =]
The missing-link that your books seem like they're missing is the effect of WWII on jazz recordings and the birth of Bebop.
From 1941 to 1944, I believe, musicians unions forbade the recording of new music, because before 1944 there were no laws in regards to royalties, because there was no need until the 1940's when the jukebox was invented and became massively popular. Then everybody went off to war. During the war, people didn't have the money (or the dates) to go out to night clubs often, and without recordings, nobody really knew what was going on in the world of jazz, which was the birth of Bebop. When everybody came back in 1945, they expected the music they had left behind and heard during their service over seas, but it had changed DRASTICALLY. And here's the point:
Bebop is not dance music, and people want music they can dance to. That created rock 'n roll. Rock and roll came out of a jazz rhythm section without any horns, and filled the dance gap. Jazz was no longer dance music, and had changed into a quieter, intillectual movement. They wanted something loud you could dance to, and rock delivered. Rock is the music of that generation. The musicians that created it were baby-boomers. They developed it, they made it their own, they made it huge, and it reflects their growth as a generation and a culture. Look at early rock, Elvis, the west-coast rock, the British influence, the Woodstock explosion. If that generation hadn't been what they were, rock wouldn't have been the same.
Sorry that was long, and I'll leave the research to you
, but that's the connection you're looking for.
