I want to learn to play jazz organ... What should I do?
I want to learn the style of playing the bass on the left hand and comping or improvising on the right hand. I have some experience with jazz piano already, so what should I do?
There is a series of instructional books written specifically for this.
They are called THE COMPLETE ORGAN PLAYER by KENNETH BAKER.
They range from beginner to advanced, books 1 through 7.
Because you have played piano before hand I would recommend you started at book four, which contains things like spinning wheel etc.
Book five is completely on Jazz
Book six is latins
Book 7 is a mixture of rock and roll (50's like jailhouse rock) a billy joel rag and some more latins.
(They are graded, so book one is easy=mary had a little lamb etc, and they increase in difficulty with each book)
Organ is different from playing the piano in that notes are held and swapped and not replayed in the new chord (Unless you're using rhythm work)
These books will show you how to use all the keyboards and the pedal board as well. They have chord and scaling basses, and they will show you how to introduce a full rhythm between the two.
There is also another book in the same series called the heel and toe supplement which shows you how to move around the pedalboard with ease and precision.
Basically with the organ you have two keyboards and the pedalboard.
The upper keyboard is usually used for the melody and improvising
The lower keyboard is used for chords (either held or used together with the pedal for rhythm)
The pedal board is used to play the root of the chord OR an arpeggio of the chord OR walking basses (scales)
The choices you make depend on the style of music you are playing.
