Any pro bass guitarists out there? I need help?
I want to become a pro bass guitarist am I'm teaching myself (tutor not an option right now) gear: 4 string epiphone les paul special, cd100 amp. I'm mostly into metal and jazz but would like to be an all rounder. progress: 0-22 memorised on fb. working on an 8hr daily practice routine. Please tell me anything and everything you can think of that you feel i should focus on/be aware of to become a pro.
some questions - Is it better to practice bass siting down or standing up (i.e. to develop stamina for gigs)? What is the correct/best bass and body positioning/technique when standing up and sitting down, for greater efficiency and to avoid injuries? A description or site link showing this would be so helpful - i find it more difficult to see the strings/frets and play when standing as opposed to when sitting down. Slap bass... tips welcome. hope you guys can help, thanks.
Learn to read music. Seriously! Not tab, but proper music notation with a bass clef. Yes it's difficult but you want to be a pro, don't you?
Learn music theory, particularly harmony and the theory behind bass lines.
Learn to sight-read so you can play from a piano left-hand part looking over the pianist's shoulder.
Learn to improvise a bass line around chord charts. Essential.
Play standing up, not sitting down. Eight hours a day sounds too much to me but then I've always been lazy.
DON'T look at your fingers or strings or frets when you play! You should be able to play in the dark or with your eyes shut. A pro player can lay his fingers exactly where he wants on the fingerboard without looking. So can you if you try, have some confidence. Playing without looking at your hands is essential if you want to be able to read written music. Looking at your fingers is one of the worst habits you can get into, IMO.
Don't sling the guitar too low, it may look cool (?) but it's much more difficult to play and can cause damage.
Buy a fretless bass and learn to play it in tune. It will vastly improve your technique on the fretted instrument, and you might find you prefer it. It's more versatile.
Try to use all four fingers of your left hand. (Though some say using the third finger can lead to problems.)
Practise scales and arpeggios of all keys and chords. Boring but essential.
Practise playing by ear to songs you've never heard before.
Slap bass -- not my style, I hate the whole idea of it, I call it bass abuse. A melodic fingerstyle bass line, like Paul McCartney's, is much more musical IMO
Play with pro and semi-pro musicians whenever possible, and learn about the business.
