How can i name my bass guitar?
I just got a bass guitar from a flea market... FOR 8 DOLLARS! The only thing missing is the nut. My only problem is there isn't a brand name on it... anywhere. It's a 60's 70's era fender jazz bass knockoff. How can I figure out what brand it is?
An $8 bass! Score!
It's possible there some information about the manufacturer on the base of the neck where it bolts to the body, but most knockoffs don't contain many clues as to their origin. If it's a Fender jazz bass knockoff, though, a Fender-style replacement nut will probably work for you. You may have to sand it a little bit to make it fit perfectly, but you can get a replacement nut for a few dollars online or for a little more at any guitar store that does repairs. If the nut slot isn't clean, you can use a razor blade to remove any remaining glue. Then all you have to do is glue the replacement in place with epoxy or Super Glue and restring the bass, since the string tension will hold the new nut in place while the glue dries. Here's a link to a bargain-priced nut:
